An
introduction by our Latin American district leader,
Br. Juan Casey
The Christian Brothers have worked in Latin America for more than sixty years, mainly in the formal education sector (schools). In more recent years our work has broadened to include educational projects with street children and young men in prison and coming out of prison.
Most Latin American cities generate large populations of youth who struggle to integrate into society. Coming from backgrounds of extreme poverty and social exclusion, some end up living on the streets, get involved in glue sniffing and the various other social ills associated with homelessness. The temptation to become involved in crime is never far away.
Christian Brothers and co-workers are involved in front-line responses to disadvantaged youth in schools and other outreach centres. Much of the time is spent building relationships of confidence and accompanying the young people in their struggle for a dignified life. Education is a key stepping-stone out of poverty while equipping young people for the world of work.
