In 2005 UNICEF highlighted the work of the Christian Brothers in Sierra Leone in providing services for the rehabilitation and education of young child combatants. The Edmund Rice story in Sierra Leone is a story of compassion, service and solidarity with the victims of war and with a people longing for peace.
It is also a story of resilience. Young peope have demonstrated a remarkable capacity to find new hope and new life despite the trauma they have suffered at the hands of adults, and sometimes, each other. Much of the work of the Christian Brothers in Sierra Leone involves assisting the young people to deal with their deep memories of trauma and to discover within themselves a resilient hope for the future
